Instances de pommité consists of two black-and-white photographs taken by Anri Sala in Berlin-Mitte. The artist roamed the streets of the German capital, looking for cracks and fractures in the sidewalks that matched the lines of his palms.
Anri Sala's photographic works are an integral yet distinct part of the artist's practice. Akin to his important early films, the images combine a keenly observed documentary quality with a sense of poetic abstraction. The images often depict objects or sites with oblique cultural and historical references, in particularly tied to a sociology of place related to the artist's youth in Albania. Even as the found motifs have a certain starkness, the classicism of their composition gives Anri Sala's photographs a timeless, painterly quality.
Speaking about the relationship between his films and his photographic works, Anri Sala emphasized their distinctiveness:
"One aspect of photography that interests me is the relation between the cadre (inside the frame) and hors cadre (outside the frame), which is less apparent in film, because In film, the succession and the progression of the moving images leads to a main story. Therefore, even when I make photographs that were shot at the same site where I shot a movie, I think there is a substantial difference and reason for them to be."
Presenting the world outside the frame as palpable presence to be felt and/or inferred by the spectator is a recurring motif of Anri Sala's work. Time becomes visible, as the images seem to combine stillness and animation—sometimes literally, depicting for example the moment in a game, other times, as traces of human presence existing outside the frame.
The edition is sold unframed. Should you be interested in framing options, please contact bookstore@estherschipper.com before purchase.
