Jac Leirner's new series of collages features superstars: famous actors of the 20th century, among them for example Marlon Brando, Ingrid Bergman, Charlie Chaplin, Rock Hudson, Marylin Monroe and Ginger Rogers.
The collages consist of black and white portraits or film stills, on which pieces of paper or cardboard have been superimposed. Obscuring much of the image, the overlain forms are marked by pattern or repeated shapes.
Formally, the Superstar collages also recall the artist's Adhesives 44, 2004. That work employed a multitude of stickers and sometimes also the sheets from which they were taken, creating a kind of screen in which positive and negative spaces seemed to oscillate.
The defacement, quite literally covering most of the iconic faces, may be a reference both to the passing of these superstars—all are deceased—and to the fleeting nature of stardom and indeed existence. At the same time, characteristic of Jac Leirner's practice, there is also lighthearted and playful side to these collages, hiding the famous faces behind bright shapes and bold pattern, prompting us to look closer to recognize the superstars.
Please note that this edition is only available for pick-up at our gallery in Berlin. In case of any questions, please contact bookstore@estherschipper.com.
