A pink linen-bound book with silver embossed title, The Mammoth Book of Eyewitnesses is imposing in size and its promise of information. However, if one looks inside, all the pages are blank. Julia Scher created this sculpture specifically on occasion of her solo exhibition by the same name (Paris, 2024), in which the works act as witnesses to the many faces and characters of surveillance. With this particular work, Scher highlights the fact that in spite of the ubiquitous presence of surveillance in our daily lives, no one wants to be an eyewitness. We are much more comfortable being passive witnesses through the technology we carry or data we surrender online, than to speak out of our own accord.
