This print is part of a set of 16 black and white prints that each features a distinct motif. Each print combines early woodcut imagery from pre-industrial Europe with lines of printed dialogue. The short texts are extracts from the scripted performance „Mirrored Image: A Volvo Bar“ from 2008. This performance had its premiered at the exhibition "Three perspectives and a short scenario" at the Kunstverein München. The performance took place amid the installation "Volvo Bar", serving as a stage, on September 28, 2008. In April 2010, the performance was shown on the occasion of the retrospective at the KAH Bonn "One long walk… two short piers…".
The play "A Volvo Bar" constructs a short scenario that adapts the exhibition space as a stage on which social phenomena of a post-industrial society are played put, presenting a core aspect in the work: the negotiation of models of communality. The dialogue included on the suite of prints is taken from the first scene and begins with someone ordering a beer.
The unique motifs of the 16 prints are from medieval wood engravings and include images of landscapes, cities, everyday life, crafts people and scenes from a royal and a religious contexts.
The allusion to the Swedish carmaker Volvo is a recurring theme in Gillick's work. It refers to what the artist has called the "Volvo question"—his research into the legacy of 1970s production techniques in Scandinavia and models of flexibility, collaboration, and the idea of a better working environment in an ideally productive post-Fordist context.
