This work is part of a 13 part series of prints pairing the name of a location (designating a city, district or neighborhood) with a date. The series takes as point of departure a list of important architectural sites for which Gillick noted its place and date but not the name of the specific structure nor their architect. Under the assumption that, despite their relevance as architectural landmarks, he would eventually forget, this self-experiment became a work on architecture and modernism.
Emptied of its concrete meaning, the designation of "significant places" both in regard to the history of modernism and to the artist's subjective choice, has lost its usefulness, highlighting the contingency of knowledge and influence. Thus, while the enigmatic pairings can function as invitation to identify the forgotten structures, the futility of this process is revealed before it even begins. Significant Places poses a series of oppositions–between significance and meaninglessness, memory and history, precision and vagueness–that address the history of modernism and its legacy both with slight melancholy and great sympathy.
